Two Way Street ?
The education industry is big business in Australia, but where exactly are these lucrative students
coming
from? Are Australian students venturing abroad as much as we are welcoming others from around the world?
Data shows that a huge majority of incoming students originate from Asia, with nine out of the top ten
countries sending students being Asian. These students tend to come to enjoy generous visa conditions,
prospects of future employment, geographic proximity and safe and high standards of living. On the other
hand, the destinations of Australian students are much less Asia-centric. Led by the USA and followed by
European countries, our students are not as focussed on our regional neighbours. Whilst cultural and
political ties may have lured Australians to America and Europe as traditional study destinations, this
equilibrium is shifting. With government initiatives such as the Colombo Plan, the number of Australians
studying in Asia is on the rise. If this trend continues the exchange of students between Australia and
its
regional partners will become more so a two-way street.
